Rules of play
The Cup at a glance
- USGA rules govern our matches, except for the tournament exceptions listed below.
- Team LA vs Team OC: 12 players per side, 36 holes in one day, all from the Blue tees.
- Round 1: Best Ball on holes 1–9, then Alternate Shot on holes 10–18 with the same partners and opponents.
- Round 2: 18-hole singles matches, with two separate 1v1 matches in each foursome.
- 24 points available: 1 point for a match win, ½ point per side for a tied match. Team OC needs 12 points to retain; Team LA needs 12½ points to win.
Best Ball · holes 1–9
- Two-person Best Ball match play: both partners play their own ball; the lower net score counts for the team on each hole.
- Players receive 100% of their approved nine-hole Course Handicap from the final tournament workbook.
- Discuss team tactics with your partner only. No assistance from captains or non-playing teammates.
Alternate Shot · holes 10–18
- Two-person modified Alternate Shot match play: both partners tee off, choose one drive, then alternate shots.
- The partner whose drive was not selected plays the next shot. Continue with the ball from the selected tee shot; no switching balls.
- Team handicap: 60% of the lower-handicap player’s Course Handicap plus 40% of the higher-handicap player’s Course Handicap.
- Discuss team tactics with your partner only. No assistance from captains or non-playing teammates.
Singles · round 2
- 1v1 match play over 18 holes. Two individual matches share each foursome.
- Players receive 100% of their approved 18-hole Course Handicap from the final tournament workbook.
- No assistance from teammates or captains.
Handicap strokes & score entry
- Use the approved handicaps in the final tournament workbook.
- Play off the lowest handicap in each match: all four players for Best Ball, the two team handicaps for Alternate Shot, and the two opponents for singles.
- The lowest plays off zero. A 9-handicap against a 7-handicap receives 2 strokes, on the two hardest eligible holes.
- Nine-hole matches allocate strokes only within their nine. Singles allocate strokes across all 18 holes.
- Enter gross scores, including penalty strokes. The site applies handicap strokes and calculates the net match result.
- Best Ball: enter each player’s score. Alternate Shot: enter one score per team. Singles: one scorer can enter all four players’ scores; each 1v1 updates separately.
- Use the Round 1 group code for both nines, then the separate Round 2 group code for singles.
Putts & finishing a hole
- Only your opponent may concede your putt. You cannot concede your own putt.
- No maximum-stroke pickup rule: play out each hole until the outcome is decided.
Rangefinders & notes
- Slope on a rangefinder is allowed.
- Green books and guides are not allowed during the match. Players may refer only to their personal notes.
Injury or a no-show
- The remaining player plays one-on-two.
- In Alternate Shot, a player competing alone gets only one tee shot.
Your golf ball
- Play one type of ball throughout a match. Do not switch balls in the middle of a hole.
- Play the ball as it lies.
- To identify your ball: mark it before lifting, do not clean it, then replace it in its original location and lie.
Out of bounds · tournament options
- Option 1: play from the original spot with a 1-stroke penalty. Hit a provisional to maintain pace of play.
- Option 2: drop within two club lengths of the point of entry with a 2-stroke penalty.
Hazards · tournament rules
- Found ball: play it as it lies; you can ground your club.
- Lost ball: drop at the point of entry with a 1-stroke penalty.
- Unplayable lie in a hazard: drop at the point of entry or use back-on-the-line relief with a 1-stroke penalty.
- All hazard drops must be within two club lengths of the point of entry.
